Will Boston make another major addition or are they done adding?
The Boston Red Sox certainly have been surprising.
Boston entered the offseason with the starting rotation as the club’s biggest roster hole. The Red Sox were linked in some way to seemingly every big-name player available to help the rotation, including both free agents and trade candidates.
The Red Sox did make a splash by signing Lucas Giolito, but the club was linked to other options as well as the club had multiple other holes to fill.
Boston surprisingly hasn’t made another addition despite rumors and plenty of money to spend. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell and World Series winner Jordan Montgomery both still are available and have ties to Boston.
While this is the case, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi threw cold water on the idea of Boston signing either.
“There are other scenarios out there,” Morosi said. “The Red Sox have been mentioned but I happen to be of the mindset that if the Red Sox were going to sign Snell or Montgomery, it would’ve happened by now. As far as the (New York Yankees’) situation to me is much more fluid.”
If the Red Sox were to sign Montgomery or Snell, perceptions around the team likely would significantly change. At this time, though, this doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen.
Boston won just 78 games in 2023 and without another major addition to the rotation seem poised to follow the same pattern once again in 2024 despite plenty of money to spend.
