Chicago Bears linked to taking best ‘receiver prospect of this century’ with No.1 pick in NFL Draft

If the Chicago Bears make the bold choice of taking Ohio State star Marvin Harrison Jr. with the top overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, one college football insider believes that it would not be an outlandish decision due to his absurd potential.

While the Bears will not make the playoffs again this season there is a lot of hope over the potential of the team next season. Although they had a frustratingly rough start to 2023, the team is finishing strong and could go into the offseason winning five of their last six if they score a Week 18 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

Quarterback Justin Fields has played well and got a resounding show of support from the Bears fan base during their final home game of the season. That is part of why the team has several tough decisions to make in the offseason, including what to do with the top overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

After trading out of the top spot last year, the Bears own the Panthers selection in April, and since Carolina finished with the worst record in the league that means Chicago will have the rights to the No. 1 selection for a second straight year. And many are wondering if they will again pass on taking a top QB prospect with Fields’ potential as a true franchise signal caller unclear.

What makes matters tougher for the Bears is a case can be made that Fields has done enough to prove he is the long-term answer and he just needs more weapons around him. The 2024 draft class, oddly enough, has a skilled player who might be a perfect fit to be the young QB’s top target for years to come.

CFB insider explains why Chicago Bears taking Marvin Harrison Jr. at No. 1 is a reasonable decision

During a recent conversation with Betway.com, college football insider Brett McMurphy explained why the Chicago Bears making wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. the top pick in the draft is not unreasonable because he is one of the best prospects at his position that the NFL has ever seen.

“In one word, yes,” McMurphy said when asked if Harrison Jr. is the best receiver prospect of the century. “Only three wide receivers have been selected first overall in the NFL draft, USC’s Keyshawn Johnson was the last one in 1996. He didn’t do too bad. Three-time Pro Bowler, 11-year career. I think Harrison is in that that caliber. I would go back to maybe Randy Moss, somebody that you could compare his talents to. And then I looked it up. Randy Moss was, I think, the 21st pick in the first round, what were the first 20 teams thinking?

“[Harrion Jr. is the] nation’s only wide receiver to average over 18 yards a catch this year with at least five catches a game. He is a big-time, big-play wide receiver and just think what he will be able to do with an elite quarterback,” he continued, “Some NFL scouts think the Bears, because of Harrison’s talent, might decide that they’re good with Fields and select Harrison first overall. I think that’s something to keep your eye on when the draft gets closer is, will the Bears want to go Caleb Williams and replace Fields or do they think that Harrison is a once-in-a-lifetime pick you can’t pass up.”

It will be very interesting to see what the Bears do in what could be one of the biggest decisions the organization makes in this century.
