Patrick Mahomes is leading the Kansas City Chiefs to his fourth Super Bowl in six years as the team’s starter. The reigning NFL and Super Bowl MVP is hitting new heights and has already joined the list of the league’s greatest quarterbacks.
Regardless of what happens in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11, Mahomes’ reputation, Mahome already has to be considered one of the GOATs.
Former Chiefs and 49ers quarterback Alex Smith opened up about that recently, indicating that Kansas City general manager Brett Veach had his eyes on Mahomes when the quarterback was a mere freshman with Texas Tech back in 2014. The story is as interesting as it gets.

Smith relays a story in which Veach went into the quarterback room when Mahomes was a freshman, telling quarterbacks they have to watch his tape in the process.
What makes this story so interesting is the fact that Smith was in his second season as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback after being acquired from San Francisco. Talk about coming full circle.
In the end, Smith lasted five seasons as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback before they opted to move on to Mahomes as a sophomore ahead of the 2018 season.
As for Mahomes, he’s set to lead his Chiefs team against Smith’s former 49ers squad. It is among the to storylines heading into the Super Bowl given the fact that this is the second time in five years that the two teams have gone against one another.
