Could Giants make an aggressive move up in 2024 NFL draft?

The New York Giants have yet another critical offseason ahead of them after a season of regression in 2023. Figuring out what direction they should go in with the sixth pick in the 2024 NFL draft is a top priority for general manager Joe Schoen.

Ironically enough, the last time Big Blue selected sixth overall, they took Daniel Jones in 2018.

Could the Giants possibly trade up in the upcoming draft in order to take Jones’ successor?

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport recently broke down the NFL teams possibly looking for quarterbacks in the draft and suggested keeping an eye on the Giants as a team possibly looking to trade up.

The Giants are confident Daniel Jones will be ready to go Week 1 after tearing his ACL in early November. He’s been in the team facility regularly for rehab work, and while he’s not moving a lot yet, he’s said to be making good progress.

Jones has $35.5 million fully guaranteed in 2024; after that, the guarantees are for injury only. The Giants are sitting at No. 6 in the draft order, which means they’d likely have to move up to nab one of the top quarterbacks in April.

GM Joe Schoen attended a handful of games this past fall in which those passers were playing, including the USC-Washington game that featured both Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr.. Keep an eye on Big Blue to see if they try jockeying for position at the top of the draft.

It’s important to note the wording here. This isn’t a “report” as much as speculation. “Keep an eye on” and “to see” and “if” and “try.”

On one hand, it seems crazy for the Giants to give up on Jones just five and a half games into the lucrative contract he landed last offseason. However, there is no telling when the Giants will be picking this high again and they can get out of Jones’ contract after next season.

Schoen has scouted the QB prospects during the season but that was before knowing the Giants would be picking outside the top five.

If the Giants were to trade up to get the first overall pick, it would likely require a ‘historic haul.’

Big Blue seems committed to Jones and with plenty of needs across the roster, the Giants have a tough decision to make.
