Bill Belichick could make New York Giants head coach decision thanks to family links

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick could find himself returning to the New York Giants thanks to his relationship with the owners, it has been claimed.

After 24 seasons, Belichick left the Patriots at the end of a challenging 2023 campaign. Despite this, he’s ultimately remembered for transforming the Patriots into a six-time Super Bowl-winning team alongside quarterback Tom Brady and owner Rob Kraft.

When Brady moved to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, the Patriots began to struggle. After a disappointing 4-13 finish, Belichick stepped down as head coach and general manager. The Atlanta Falcons strongly considered him for their head coach role but ultimately chose Raheem Morris, the Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator.

As a result, the chances of coaching legend Belichick landing another top job are shrinking. If a team finds their 2024 season below par, they may turn to him for help. As ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on ‘Get Up’: “That question is going to hang out all season long because right now there is no indication that Bill Belichick is going to land one of these (current) head coaching jobs.”

Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum speculated about Belichick’s potential availability in 2025 and tied him to the Giants. The coach has previously worked as a defensive coordinator for the NFC East franchise and has strong ties with them.

Tannenbaum quipped: “The biggest shadow he is going to cast is in East Rutherford, New Jersey,” Tannenbaum claimed. “He has a great relationship with the Mara family. The first time the Giants lose a game, Brian Daboll – whether it’s fair or unfair – is going to have to answer that question every press conference.”

The Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders are the only two teams left needing a head coach. With the Giants and Jets in a bit of a pickle, Belichick’s knowledge of both teams could put him in the running if either team continues to struggle.
