MLB spring training is already underway, but there are still several top free agents waiting to sign a contract ahead of the 2024 season. The Boston Red Sox, who are coming off their second consecutive season watching October baseball from home, don’t appear to be done shopping in free agency just yet.
With names like Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger, Jordan Montgomery, and Matt Chapman still unsigned in free agency, there are plenty of targets for the Red Sox to focus on. But there’s one name Boston’s front office is prioritizing as exhibition season gets underway.
Former Yankee Jordan Montgomery becomes Boston Red Sox’s top free agent target
With the Boston Red Sox still looking to improve their starting rotation, Rob Bradford of Audacy Sports is reporting that the team is “prioritizing” signing Jordan Montgomery over all other free agents available.
However, like many other teams around the diamond, the Red Sox are still waiting for Montgomery’s price to come down. After helping the Texas Rangers win the World Series, there’s no doubt Montgomery’s stock is at an all-time high, which may be the only reason he’s still unsigned.
But after having a 3.20 ERA split between the St. Louis Cardinals and Rangers, Montgomery has done more than enough to show he’s capable of helping any rotation he joins. If the Red Sox get their way, he’ll join a rotation led by Brayan Bello, providing much-needed depth in Boston.
