Cubs Linked in Blockbuster Deal to Acquire Former Star Draft Pick

The Chicago Cubs could make a major splash by getting one of the best pitchers on the market who happened to once be part of their organization.

Chicago Cubs Linked in Blockbuster Deal to Acquire Former Star Draft Pick - Sports Illustrated Inside The Cubs

After being seen as one of the teams who would likely be aggressive in the offseason, the Chicago Cubs have been quiet, making no major splash moves as of yet.

The perception of their offseason could change with one move if they’re able to land one of the best players on the market.

After whiffing on Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Juan Soto, the front office needs to do something noteworthy to back up their talk of building an immediate contender.

Trading for 2022 AL Cy Young runner-up Dylan Cease would do just that.

The star right-hander was a former sixth round pick of the Cubs in 2014 and spent almost three years in their organization. He was traded by Chicago, along with Eloy Jimenez, Matt Rose, and Bryant Flete, to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Jose Quintana.

Now, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score, thinks that the Cubs could target making a trade for their former draft pick this offseason, saying it’s the “most logical deal for both teams.”

It was recently reported by Jason Williams of The Cincinnati Enquirer that the White Sox asked the Cincinnati Reds for a package that included their No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 overall prospects. Two of them are pitchers and one is an infielder.

For Chicago, that package would likely equate to giving up their No. 2 overall prospect, pitcher Cade Horton, No. 3 prospect, outfielder Owen Caissie and their No. 5 overall prospect, pitcher Ben Brown.

That is a hefty deal to get Cease, even though he has two more years of club control.

He certainly would help out the Cubs immediately, slotting in as their ace for the next two seasons. But if they can’t add more talent onto this roster before pulling off this blockbuster trade, then they might have mortgaged the future with little to show for it.
