The New York Yankees at one point seemed like the most likely landing spot to land a former Most Valuable Player.
Former Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs star Cody Bellinger is available and arguably is the top free-agent offensive player still available. It seemed like he was going to land with the Yankees, but that hasn’t been the case since New York landed superstar Juan Soto.
It’s been unclear exactly where Bellinger will land ever since, but a reunion with the Cubs is seen as the most likely option at this point, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.
“The Cubs need to make a move and I think they had a fan fest or something along those lines recently and I think they were reminded that the fans and the teammates do want Bellinger back,” Heyman said. “So, at this point, I do believe that is the likelihood. I’m not saying it’s a guarantee in any way, I’ll just say that I think they are the favorites at this moment. I don’t want to say they’re likely, that’s probably overstating it. But, we’ll say the Cubs are the favorites for Bellinger.
Bellinger is a star and would’ve helped the Yankees out, but landing Soto was a much better move. Soto fills a role Bellinger would’ve but likely will be even better.
The 2019 National League Most Valuable Player still is one of the top outfielders in baseball and it wouldn’t be too surprising to see him land in Chicago now.
