New York Yankees reportedly making a legitimate push to land top pitcher available in trade market

The New York Yankees are reportedly one of the teams that are making a real effort to complete a trade for Chicago White Sox ace Dylan Cease.

This has been an eventful offseason so far for the Yankees. While they have been a bit more conservative when it comes to adding large sums of new payroll — although they made a serious effort to sign Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto — they have been aggressive in the trade market.

The organization made the first and biggest splash in the trade market this offseason when they were able to swing a blockbuster deal trade for San Diego Padres All-Star Juan Soto. The outfielder is a player they have had their eyes on for a couple of years and the trade was a huge win since they did not have to give up their top minor-league prospects for the impending free agent.

Entering the winter, a top priority was to bolster their starting rotation behind American League Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole. While there are still some notable free-agent pitchers available — Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, and Shota Imanaga — it seems their asking price may be above what the Yankees are willing to spend.

That may be why they are again looking to the trade block to address that goal, and they are reportedly in the running for the best pitcher available. On Thursday, The Athletic MLB insider Ken Rosenthal gave an update on the chase for White Sox ace Dylan Cease and where the Yankees fit into the equation.

“The White Sox are weighing offers for Cease, and the [New York Yankees] and [Baltimore Orioles] are among those to express ‘sincere’ interest, according to major-league sources briefed on the discussions.”

Rosenthal also revealed that the Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, and Boston Red Sox are also believed to be potential players in the Dylan Cease sweepstakes.

Cease is a rising star in the AL and is still under team control (via arbitration) for two more seasons. The 28-year-old finished second in the 2022 AL Cy Young race.
