NY Giants near the very bottom of ESPN’s early 2024 NFL Power Rankings

After the way things went for the NY Giants this past season, it feels like a major step back has been taken by the organization. After the 2022 campaign came to a close, the future was looking bright – the G-Men went 9-7-1 and made it to the Divisional Round.

New York Giants v Las Vegas Raiders

Then, everything that could have gone wrong for the team in 2023 did, with Big Blue going 6-11 and missing out on the playoffs. Looking ahead to 2024, the Chiefs are favored to repeat as Super Bowl champions. In a new way-too-early power rankings from ESPN, the Giants aren’t considered threats at all. Instead, the NFC East side is ranked No. 27. Woof.

The Giants have a lot of work to do this offseason to prove people wrong

“The Giants are at a crossroads with impending free agent running back Saquon Barkley. It’s either now or never in terms of committing to their running back long-term. New York also needs to decide if it’s willing to build the team around quarterback Daniel Jones in a year where it has the No. 6 overall pick and plenty of draft capital. Drafting a quarterback is clearly an option with Jones’ injury history now including two neck injuries and a torn ACL. “

– Jordan Raanan
As Jordan Raanan noted, there’s plenty of uncertainty surrounding the Giants’ best players. Saquon Barkley could be on his way out via free agency, while Daniel Jones could be replaced by a quarterback taken in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Star safety Xavier McKinney could end up joining a new team too. That’s why the draft and free agency are going to be massive for general manager Joe Schoen and Co. The Giants were expected to be contenders last year, but again, 2023 was a nightmare for everyone in East Rutherford.

Per ESPN, the only teams in worse shape than Brian Daboll’s men heading into the new season are the Titans, Cardinals, Patriots, Commanders and Panthers. Countless tough decisions are on the way for Schoen, but there will be no excuses for this team from an improvement standpoint. Hopefully we can look back on these rankings and say ESPN was way off with their assessment.
