Report: Broncos Hire Ex-Saints Assistant Scouting Director Cody Rager

The Denver Broncos are adding a new perspective to their scouting department. According to multiple reports, the Broncos are hiring long-time New Orleans Saints assistant scouting director Cody Rager to the front office.

According to 9NEWS’ Mike Klis, Rager will be the Broncos’ new vice president of player personnel.

Report: Broncos Hire Ex-Saints Assistant Scouting Director Cody Rager

The Broncos are in the process of hiring Cody Rager as their vice president of player personnel. Rager had been with the New Orleans Saints the previous nine years, most recently as their assistant college scouting director. While there, he impressed former Saint-turned-Broncos head coach Sean Payton to hire him away with a promotion.

Rager spent the past three years in New Orleans as their assistant scouting director and has a past working relationship with Payton. The Broncos have hired many former Saints coaches and executives since Payton took the reins.

Mike Westhoff (special teams/assistant head coach), Dan Dalrymple (strength and conditioning), Joe Lombardi (offensive coordinator), and Beau Lowery (V.P. of player health & performance) headline the New Orleans-to-Denver transplants. Rager joins the Broncos, and another of Payton’s former top lieutenants could follow.

Rumors abound that Payton’s long-time offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, who was recently jettisoned by the Saints, could soon land in Denver. Keep an eye on that situation.

Rager will work closely with Broncos GM George Paton, and his top acolytes — assistant GM Darren Mougey, college scouting director Brian Stark, and pro personnel director A.J. Durso — in the front office.

What are the Rager implications on Paton’s job security in Denver? The Broncos have tamped down any notion that Paton could be on the outs this offseason, and nothing about the Rager hire contradicts the team’s position.

This hire seems to be more about getting a personnel eye that Payton trusts into the fold at Dove Valley.
