The New York Giants will have many important decisions about their rosters this offseason. After an injury-plagued 6-11 season, the Giants have more than a few positions that need to be retooled and other positions with starters. Still, they could use improvement or competition, like what could be the case for their quarterback position.
Although the Giants recently signed Daniel Jones to a four-year deal worth $160 million, Jones missed 11 games this season with multiple injuries.
However, Jones had been struggling on the field even before his injuries this season. He’d finish his shortened season with a 1-5 starting record and the lowest average of passing yards per game in his five-year career by nearly 50 yards.
Should the Giants use free agency to bolster their quarterback position, they have a few quality options on the market.
The first obviously would be to re-sign Tyrod Taylor, who served as the team’s backup the last two seasons. Taylor took over the starting job in Week 6 when Jones went down. He played well that week against the Bills, turning a till-then lifeless offense into a somewhat functional one, only to come up short in that game.
He finished with a 2-3 record as a starter and posted a 64.4 completion percentage (116 of 180), throwing for 1,341 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. The red flag with the 34-year-old Taylor, however, is that he seems to be a magnet for injuries–he suffered a rib cage injury in the overtime loss to the Jets that landed him on IR, thus opening the door for Tommy DeVito for a bit before finally reclaiming the starting job after DeVito was benched midway through the team’s second game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
If Taylor isn’t an option–he’s expected to have a market for his services–then Ryan Tannehill, currently with the Tennessee Titans, might be someone to pursue. Tannehill is expected to move on now that the Titans have their guy in Will Levis. While it’s possible that Tannehill just re-ups with the Titans to back up Levis, Tannehill would be an intriguing candidate to check in on.
In 155 games played, Tannehill is 3,063 of 4,764 (64.3 completion percentage) for 34,881 yards and 216 touchdowns to just 115 interceptions. He has an 81-70 won-loss record as a starter.
With Daniel Jones a question mark to be ready for the start of the 2024 season, Tannehill would give the Giants a backup with a fairly proven track record who should be ready to step in if needed.
