Barring any surprises, the Chicago Bears are set to take Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft that begins next Thursday. The Bears obtained the pick via the Carolina Panthers, who gave up their 2024 first-rounder as part of the deal to move up and take Bryce Young first overall in 2023.

During the Cubs’ afternoon home game against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field, Chicago fans sitting in left field started a “Caleb Williams” chant:

The Bears all but confirmed that they’d be selecting Williams when they traded starting QB Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a late-round pick. In his final season of college football, Williams threw for 3,633 yards and 30 touchdowns against only five interceptions.

Over the past 15 or so years, there haven’t been many quarterback prospects who entered the NFL with as much hype as Williams. Only Andrew Luck (first overall in 2012) and Trevor Lawrence (first overall in 2021) had this same level of expectations as Williams.

Williams has the skill set and a deep set of playmakers (including Keenan Allen, DJ Moore and D’Andre Swift) to emerge immediately as a superstar. If Williams comes as advertised, the Bears will have found their first true franchise quarterback since Sid Luckman, who played for the Bears from 1939 to 1950.
