The New York Yankees have attempted to make another big trade.
New York arguably made the biggest trade of the offseason as the club acquired superstar slugger Juan Soto in a deal with the San Diego Padres. The Yankees didn’t stop there and have continued adding ever since.
The Yankees still could use at least one more addition to the starting rotation and one player who has popped up on multiple occasions is Chicago White Sox ace Dylan Cease.
Cease still is with Chicago, but has been in trade rumors consistently over the last year. It seems like a certainty that he will be moved but it’s unclear if it will be before the 2024 season begins, or ahead of the trade deadline.
The only clear thing, though, is New York at least has held conversations with the White Sox about a possible move, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.
“As things stand now, the Yankees have too many rotation questions to be taken too seriously as a World Series contender, despite the low odds Vegas is putting on them (plus 1000 or 10-1, tied with Houston),” Heyman said. “The Yankees do seem to understand they need another starter, which is why they’ve been trying for White Sox star Dylan Cease, and why they are still at least being linked to free agent Blake Snell…
“The issue, as The Post reported, is that the White Sox sought speed-power threat Spencer Jones, the Yankees’ top prospect. Scouts see him as a future 30-30 man, so that’s not a tough one. None of this is easy. But they did say they are hell-bent on winning, and the rotation they have now isn’t nearly deep enough.
” Cease would be a massive addition for the Yankees. If they miss out on Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, don’t be surprised if a move eventually happens involving Cease.
