Yankees Linked To Elite Fireballer In Possible Surprising Trade Involving Young Infielder

The New York Yankees have been looking for ways to improve their bullpen.

Yankees Linked To Elite Fireballer In Possible Surprising Trade Involving Young Infielder - Sports Illustrated NY Yankees News, Analysis and More

New York had the best bullpen in baseball last season but now has lost both Wandy Peralta and Keynan Middleton in free agency. Peralta recently signed with the San Diego Padres and Middleton agreed to a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals despite rumors that both would land back with New York.

The Yankees need to find a way to reload the bullpen and there still are some intriguing options out there in free agency, but also on the trade market. One player who has been floated as a trade option is Miami Marlins reliever Tanner Scott by Fox Sports’ Jordan Shusterman.

“New York Yankees acquire (left-handed pitcher) Tanner Scott from Marlins for (shortstop) Oswald Dair Peraza,” Shusterman said. “Let’s stick in Miami. The Marlins have a trio of excellent left-handed relievers in Scott, A.J. Puk, and Andrew Nardi. Scott is the best of the bunch and was one of baseball’s best relievers last year, but he is also slated to hit free agency after this upcoming season.

“If the Yankees are done spending on their rotation but still want to upgrade the pitching staff in an impactful way, maybe they can dangle Peraza as a potential long-term shortstop solution for the Fightin’ Fish in exchange for Scott.”

Shusterman compiled a list of hypothetical win-win trades and floated this option for the Yankees and it would make a lot of sense.

New York still is looking for some help for the bullpen and Scott was one of the top relievers in baseball last year. He had a 2.31 ERA and a 104-to-24 strikeout-to-walk ratio and his advanced metrics are even more impressive.

Peraza has shown flashes and has plenty of upside, but the Yankees have a lot of depth in the infield. If this trade is a possibility, why not swing a deal?
