Bengals draft boom-or-bust offensive tackle with 18th pick in NFL Draft

With the 18th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals selected Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims. The Bengals are getting another massive body at the tackle position, as Mims stands at 6-8 and weighs 340 pounds.

The Cochran, Georgia native only started in eight games (while playing 29 total) in his three seasons with the Bulldogs; however, he was extremely effective when on the field, not allowing a sack and giving up just six QB hurries during his collegiate career.

Mims’ lack of experience means he will likely be a project, and Cincinnati’s history with developing trench players hasn’t been stellar, with OG Cordell Volson standing as the lone remaining starting offensive lineman drafted by the Bengals.

Even though the Bengals added former Patriot and veteran offensive tackle Trent Brown, Mims may still see significant snaps this season.

Brown has had problems staying on the field, playing in just 11 games last season for New England.

Cincinnati cannot afford to miss on this pick, as Joe Burrow has now faced two season-ending injuries after being sacked 148 times in his four years as the Bengals starter.

Cincinnati must keep its star quarterback upright if it wants to contend for Lombardis.

The potential is certainly there for Mims to be an elite NFL tackle. Still, his inability to stay healthy is a major concern for the Bengals as they look to improve an offensive line that has ranked at the bottom of all major categories in the Burrow era.
