Giants listed as one of ESPN’s biggest wild cards for the NFL Draft’s first round

If you think you’re confused about what NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen might end up doing in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, have some comfort in knowing you’re not alone. No one knows what the third-year GM is thinking, though it feels like a lock he’s going to focus on offense.

Schoen could trade up for either J.J. McCarthy or Jayden Daniels (or even Drake Maye), but he could also bring in a star wideout for Daniel Jones to work with. In a new piece from ESPN, analyst Jordan Reid has the Giants as his ‘wild card’ for the 2024 first round. Reid knows Schoen has options, but just like all of us, he’s unsure about which direction he will go in.

Will the Giants bring in a first-round QB or WR1 in the 2024 NFL Draft?
“With the No. 6 pick, it seems that a lot depends on how they view this year’s QB class. If McCarthy or another highly graded passer is still on the board, do the Giants draft him? Daniel Jones hasn’t stayed healthy (torn ACL in 2023) and struggled when he did play last season, so GM Joe Schoen could look to take his QB of the future. But wide receiver is an alternative avenue for them. Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State), Malik Nabers (LSU) and Rome Odunze (Washington) are three great options who could be available. The Giants lack a true WR1, and any of them would immediately be the top option for the team as a rookie.”

There’s the outside chance a right tackle is taken, but that wouldn’t be the sexiest of picks. Going after a Jones replacement or a speedster on the outside sure would be. Recently, the Giants had dinner with Malik Nabers and they watched him up close and personal at his LSU Pro Day.

According to ESPN’s Brady Henderson, the Giants also brought in Rome Odunze for a visit shortly after the NFL Combine in Indy. What about Marvin Harrison Jr.? It’s crazy to think about, but if the top four picks are quarterbacks and the Chargers go with either Joe Alt or Brock Bowers at No. 5, then the Ohio State product could be on the table for Big Blue as well.

There will be no shortage of incredible options for Schoen if he stays at No. 6, but again, moving up to land a QB1 of the future is something he and Brian Daboll are surely thinking about. Until April 25 gets here, everyone will be left wondering what Schoen is going to do. Goodness, draft night can’t get here any sooner.
