Latest Daniel Jones-Giants report already has us thinking about 2025 QBs

If there was one thing clear from the 2024 NFL Draft, it was that NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen was doing everything possible to try and trade up for Drake Maye. While there was some speculation Joe Alt was Schoen’s No. 1 target, Mike Garafolo already cleared things up.

New York Giants v Las Vegas Raiders

With the G-Men seemingly ready to move on from Daniel Jones, it sure feels like the 2024 campaign is going to be his last with the team. With the way his contract is structured, there’s no more guaranteed dough after this upcoming fall and winter. As ESPN’s Jordan Raanan put it, it sure feels like Jones’ days in East Rutherford are numbered.

“Jones has no guaranteed money remaining after 2024 and has three serious injuries over the past three seasons, including two neck injuries. He’s currently rehabbing from a torn ACL in his right knee but is expected to be ready for training camp. It seems likely that Jones’ days in New York are now numbered. He’s entering Year 6 having rarely shown the ability to carry a team. He’s never come close to a Pro Bowl. The last quarterback to win a Super Bowl without having made a Pro Bowl was Joe Flacco in 2012.”

What’s quite frustrating about this is that despite the Giants having so many questions about Jones, Schoen and Co. decided to give him a $160 million extension after the 2022 season. Yes, Jones helped the squad get back to the postseason for the first time since 2016 and he looked fantastic against the Vikings in the Wild Card Round win.

However, we all saw how poor he looked in the Divisional Round against the Eagles. Despite that, the Giants rolled the dice and gave him a monster extension. It has proven to be a terrible decision and Schoen shouldn’t get a pass for that mistake, especially with him now trying to move on so quickly.

Jones is going to be the starter once Week 1 rolls around, but should we be surprised if Drew Lock is running the offense not too far into the season? Probably not. Jones can’t seem to stay healthy and him coming off a torn ACL is already quite concerning.

Even when he was healthy in 2023, Jones looked rough, with turnovers being an issue for him once again. He’s going to have to play at a Pro Bowl level to try and save his future with the team. However, we don’t expect that to happen and many have joined us in eyeing Shedeur Sanders, Carson Beck, Cam Ward and others as potential replacements in the draft next spring.
